On several trips in as many years, I traveled extensively throughout the Indian subcontinent. Without an itinerary, I moved around the country by bus and by train for weeks at a time. Early on, I discovered that most Indians love to be photographed. They seem to summon up all their dignity, standing alert and erect for the camera. I emphasize the subject, working close, frontally, with eye contact and implicit consent. My subjects are strangers, but I feel the photographs evidence an intense, if brief, connection. .
